SAJWV Nuusbriewe

13 July 2016

Dear Colleague,

The 2016 hunting season is well on its way. The number of calls and queries received at the office has dwindled considerably. Clearly the majority of our members' attention is with hunting. We appeal to members to leave the hunting farm in the same condition as what they would like to find it at their arrival.

I have had the opportunity to visit a part of Limpopo province and it is clear the impact of the drought is much more severe than one might have estimated. Please keep this in mind when you are hunting in the dry areas and be extremely careful with fires that might create havoc in such a dry season.

1. Court Application
At a very late stage in the legal process the state attorney requested more time for the Minister to prepare a responding affidavit. We accepted and agreed to the additional time but he still did not file the documents in good time. While writing this newsletter to your, the responding affidavit plus all the attachments thereto were being sent by e-mail. We received a copy of the Affidavit in electronic format but without all the supporting documentation it was impossible to get to grips with the case being argued.

The 2016 hunting season has arrived. I heard the first shots being fired on neighbouring farms over the past weekend. Those of you who are fortunate to go hunting in the coming months, please remember to adhere to firearm safety rules and always act responsibly. It is a privilege to be allowed a couple of days in the veld. Only leave footprints, respect nature, the property of others and your fellow hunter.

Recent game auction reports have shown a downward trend in game prices. Although the widespread drought and a reduction in demand might have had an impact on the prices, it could be that the reality of game farming has dawned upon the industry. New entrants into the game farming sector might have realised that it was not the easy money that some purported it to be. Only time will tell.

Dear Colleague

The SAPS caused havoc with the directive issued by Genl. Phahlane on 8 February 2016, instructing all DFOs not to accept any late applications for renewal of a firearm licence that already lapsed.

The instruction to DFOs is to inform any individual owning a firearm of which the licence already lapsed that he/she is in unlawful possession of such firearm and that the firearm is to be surrendered to the nearest police station. The individual is also to be informed that if he/she voluntarily surrenders the firearm he/she will not be prosecuted.

Geagte Kollega,

Dear Colleague

With two special editions of the newsletter during the past month you may very well wonder why the need for the normal newsletter at month-end. With everything that happened during the month with regard to the relicensing of firearms, the unusual statements made by politicians and the irresponsible and selective reporting of comments made by politicians, I believe we need to sit back and carefully summarise the situation. I will dedicate a significant portion of this newsletter to address some of the concerns on relicensing and possible changes to the Firearms Control Act No 60 of 2000. We also have a number of very interesting developments that I want to bring to your attention.
